He lived with me at Sunflowers after we closed the store. He was a full fledged outdoor cat who loved lying on the pavement feeling the warm sun on his black fur. He was a great hunter often bringing home his daily catch for me to admire.

Two years ago, when Josh moved to West Hartford, Bear became a condo cat. It took him a while to adjust to condo living but eventually made peace with his new home.

Early Monday morning, Josh called, with concern in his voice. “Mom, something’s wrong with Bear. He refused to get up this morning and he was crying when we left the house. I know he is in pain.”

“Is it possible he hurt himself?” I asked

“Not recently,” he answered. “But a week ago he was lying in the bureau drawer (which I assumed he often does) and when he jumped out, his foot got stuck and he fell to the floor. He limped for a day but since then he seemed fine. Why is it causing him pain now?”

My “testing” revealed that it was more emotional than physical. And when emotions want to reveal themselves, they manifest through a weak point on the body. Since Bear had injured that leg recently, the emotion was using his weak point to speak to Josh and Wendy.

“Bear’s injury is channeling anger through his muscular system. He is intolerant,” I explained. “He is feeling alone and abandoned. What does that mean to you?” (Intolerance can manifest itself in the muscular system and I was feeling that Bear’s muscles were inflamed with intolerance.)

Josh admitted, “We’ve been leaving him alone on weekends a lot lately. We’ve had a lot of commitments and this past weekend we were gone all weekend because we had a job house sitting for a friend.”

“Well, Bear has had enough of being alone. He has made peace living in the apartment, however, he is not happy living there alone. He is angry that you leave him every weekend.”

Josh was not sure if he believed Bear could be responding emotionally so intensely. He wondered out loud, “Do animals really react the same as people?”

I offered my suggestion, “Give him 5 drops of Beech for a week and see what happens.”

“Do you think we should take him to a vet? He was really crying this morning. What if it’s something serious?”

“Josh, it is serious. Bear is seriously angry at you. Go home and give him the Beech. By tomorrow you should know if he is getting better or not. If you are still concerned tomorrow, take him to the vet.”

I heard nothing the next day which I assumed was a good sign. The following evening, Josh called to talk and before we ended our conversation I asked, “How is Bear?”

“Oh, he’s good. You were right. He was just Beechy.”
